Objective
The objective of the Canadian Glaucoma Society (CGS) Research Awards is to encourage residents and fellows in Ophthalmology, undergraduate and graduate students in Vision Science Research, as well as established Ophthalmologists and PhD researchers, to undertake investigative research in glaucoma.
Best Glaucoma Paper Award
The Best Glaucoma Paper Award is given annually to glaucoma-related research published in a peer reviewed journal. This year’s competition is for manuscripts published in 2025. This award is presented in 4 individual categories based on level of training. For all categories, the research has to be primarily undertaken by a trainee in a Canadian program or a physician or scientist practicing within Canada, with only one submission as first author per individual. The judges will assess the innovation of the research question, rigor of the study protocol, and potential clinical application of the results as criteria in judging the competition. Projects that have not previously been awarded a CGS Best Paper or Drance Award will be given a higher priority. It is the responsibility of the applicant at the time of submission to identify the submission as a new project for consideration by the Awards Committee. The selection committee for deciding the awardee is composed of members appointed by the executive of the Canadian Glaucoma Society. Declaration of conflicts is required by all adjudicators if involved, to any extent, with any of the submissions. If no submission is received in a given category, or, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, no submitted paper reaches the level of excellence deemed worthy of recognition, no prize in that category will be presented.
Prizes
All winning researchers will be announced at the end of the research session of the 2026 Annual Meeting of the COS. Winners will receive a certificate and will also be recognized by having their names and project title posted on the CGS website. The Best Paper award winners will receive $500.
The Stephen Drance Award for Excellence in Glaucoma Research

Objective
The objective of the Canadian Glaucoma Society (CGS) Stephen Drance Award for Excellence in Glaucoma Research is to encourage students and trainees to undertake investigative research in glaucoma, while registered in a Canadian program.
Drance Award
The Stephen Drance Award for Excellence in Glaucoma Research is awarded annually to a student or trainee (undergraduate student, postgraduate student, medical student, resident or fellow) for work done while registered in a Canadian program for the best paper presentation delivered at the Research Symposium of the Canadian Glaucoma Society Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) Annual Meeting.
Projects that have not previously been awarded a CGS Best Paper or Drance Award will be given a higher priority. In cases where a project is closely related to a previous awardee, it is the applicant’s responsibility to distinguish how the project differs from prior submissions.
The selection committee for deciding the awardee is composed of members present at the meeting appointed by the Awards Committee of the Canadian Glaucoma Society. Declaration of conflicts is required by all adjudicators if involved, to any extent, with any of the submissions or applicants. Judging is done in-person, and the Chair of the CGS Awards committee will receive the tallied results following the session.
Application Process
Trainees who want their work to be considered for the Drance Award must indicate interest when submitting their abstract for presentation at COS. In order to be eligible for the award, they must apply at the time of abstract submission. Applicants must communicate their level of training, status as the primary author of the work, and confirm they contributed at least 50% to the development of this study. Award consideration is based on rank at the time the research was done; candidates may still apply for an award if they are no longer a medical student, resident or fellow as long as the project was completed during their training period. If chosen for an in-person presentation, the applicant will be contacted to provide a letter of support from the supervisor of the project to confirm their level of training and to describe the nature and extent of their contributions to the project, confirming they meet the above criteria for the award. If they are unable to attend COS to present their project, the second author, if also a trainee may present in their place and share the potential prize. It is expected that a trainee will deliver the presentation. Submissions that are presented by a non-trainee will be disqualified.
Prizes
The winning researcher of the Stephen Drance Award winner will be announced at the CGS dinner at the Annual COS meeting. They will receive a certificate, be recognized by having their name and project title posted on the CGS website, and receive a monetary prize of $1000.

Bourse pour la meilleure publication sur le glaucome

Objectif
L’objectif des bourses de recherches de la société canadienne du glaucome (SCG) vise à encourager les étudiants en médecine ou de premier cycle universitaire, stagiaires en ophtalmologie et en recherche de la vision, et les ophtalmologistes et chercheurs (PhD) établis à entreprendre des recherches sur le glaucome.
Bourse pour la meilleure publication sur le glaucome
La bourse pour la meilleure publication sur le glaucome est offerte chaque année à une recherche liée au glaucome publiée dans un journal révisé par les pairs. La compétition de cette année s’adresse aux manuscrits publiés en 2025. Cette bourse sera distribuée dans chacune des quatre catégories selon le niveau de formation du candidat. Pour chaque catégorie, la recherche doit être entreprise principalement par un/une stagiaire inscrit(e) dans un programme canadien ou par un chercheur ou médecin établi et travaillant au Canada, en raison d’une seule application par personne comme premier auteur. Lors du concours, les juges évalueront les critères suivants: l’innovation de la question de recherche, la rigueur du protocole de recherche et le potentiel d’application clinique des résultats. Les projets qui n’ont pas déjà reçu une bourse SCG pour la meilleure publication ou la Bourse Drance se verront accorder une priorité plus élevée. Le candidat est responsable de démontrer au comité des prix qu’un projet est nouveau. Les applicants pourront être contactés par email si des clarifications sont nécessaires.

L’objectif principal de la Bourse Stephen Drance pour excellence en recherche du Glaucome de la Société Canadienne du Glaucome est d’encourager un(e) étudiant(e) ou stagiaire à entreprendre des projets de recherches sur le glaucome tout en étant inscrit à un programme canadien.
Bourse Drance
La Bourse Stephen Drance pour excellence en recherche du Glaucome est offerte chaque année à un(e) étudiant(e) ou stagiaire (baccalauréat, étudiant(e)s post-universitaire, étudiant(e)s en médecine, résident(e) ou fellow), pour son travail accompli tout en étant inscrit à un programme canadien, pour le meilleur papier présenté à l’assemblée annuelle de la société canadienne du glaucome, organisé conjointement avec la réunion annuelle de la société canadienne d’ophtalmologie.
Les projets qui n’ont pas déjà reçu une bourse SCG pour la meilleure publication ou la Bourse Drance se verront accorder une priorité plus élevée. Le candidat est responsable de démontrer au comité des prix qu’un projet est nouveau, ou différent d’un projet soumis antérieurement.
Le comité de sélection pour la Bourse Drance est composé de membres qui assistent à la réunion et sont nommés par le comité des bourses de la société canadienne de glaucome. La déclaration de conflits est requise par tous les juges s’ils sont impliqués avec l’une des soumissions. Le vote se fera sur place et le président du comité de sélection des bourses du SCG recevra le résultat des votes immédiatement après la session.
Processus de demande
Les présentateurs (trices) du Symposium de recherche sur le glaucome lors de la réunion annuelle de la société canadienne d’ophtalmologie qui souhaitent que leurs travaux soient considérés pour la bourse Drance doivent l’indiquer lorsqu’ils (elles) soumettent leur résumé de projet qu’ils (elles) souhaitent présenter à la réunion annuelle de la société canadienne d’ophtalmologie. Le (la) candidat(e) doit indiquer son niveau d’éducation, s’il (elle) est le premier auteur(e) et qu’il (elle) a contribué à au moins 50% du développement du projet. Un(e) étudiant(e) peut appliquer pour la bourse tant que le projet ait été complété pendant qu’il (elle) étudiant(e), résident(e) ou fellow même s’il (elle) n’est plus un(e) étudiant(e), stagiaire ou fellow. Si le (la) candidat(e) est choisi(e) pour présenter en personne, le (la) candidat(e) sera contacté(e) afin de faire parvenir une lettre de recommandation du (de la) superviseur(e) de projet décrivant le rôle du (de la) candidat(e) dans le projet et que le/la candidat(e) répond aux critères susmentionnés pour la bourse. Si le (la) candidat(e) ne peut présenter son projet lui (elle)-même, le (la) deuxième auteur(e) pourra le présenter et partager le prix s’il (si elle) est aussi un(e) étudiant (e). Un(e) étudiant(e) doit absolument présenter le projet sinon le projet sera éliminé.
Prix
Le (la) gagnant(e) de la Bourse Stephen Drance sera dévoilé(e) lors du souper de la SCG lors de la réunion annuelle de la société canadienne d’ophtalmologie. Le (la) gagnant(e) recevra un diplôme (ou certificat), son nom ainsi que le titre de son projet seront affichés sur le site web de la SCG, et il (elle) recevra un prix monétaire de $1000.
